SAE Liverpool

Updated: Sep 6, 2020

The Brief

SAE Liverpool Institute was founded in 1976 and has since grown to become the world’s largest, industry- focused, creative media education institutions with 54 campuses in 26 countries. SAE Institute offers a comprehensive course portfolio in creative media fields (audio, film, animations, game development, music business and web) with a strong tradition of practical application and industry recognition.

Project Proposal

The existing SAE recording school was too small to accommodate growing pupil numbers. The SAE media college commissioned EI Projects to carry out various feasibility studies and digital searches and eventually found the perfect place to relocate in Liverpool’s ‘old quarter’.

The challenge was now to design and commercial fit out liverpool's Georgia House, a creaking Victorian workshop and warehouse, to provide brand new sound recording studios, motion capture suite, library, lecture theater, teaching accommodation and reception.

In addition to the ground and first floor at Georgia House, the scope of works also included the conversion of the existing lower ground floor basement that extends under the adjacent property.

A number of initial design team meetings gave the client the opportunity to fully explain how the new facilities needed to operate, which was key in determining the circulation of pupils through the building and also D.D.A access whilst maintaining security.

The architectural and acoustic design specification of the new facilities were formulated in close consultation with the campus manager to ensure that the proposed development met the brief and requirements of both teaching staff and students. Concept plans and 3D images were developed to optimise the floor space and circulation flow within the building. A cost plan of the proposed works was developed alongside the design of the new campus to ensure that the specification and scope of works fitted within the clients’ construction budget.

EI Projects were project managers, quality surveyors and principal contractor for the entire project from concept to completion. Our in house designers and architects, formulating the layout, design concept and detail, in coordination with our specialist acoustic consultants for the studio and control rooms.

The new fit out provided the opportunity to use the client’s company branding and vibrant decals to create an identity to the building and internal spaces. The final result was not only the radical transformation of a previously forgotten and neglected building but the breathtaking creation of a fit for purpose, cutting edge facilities to firmly plant Liverpool’s SAE Institute as a market leader.

On completion, our acoustic engineers carried out final testing on all the specialist spaces, the results of which exceeded the initial design criteria, to further endorse the quality of the site installation.
