The Brief
Highwood Primary School was a particularly sensitive project that we were entrusted with by Hertfordshire County Council, to refit and refurbish following extensive flood damage. Although the project was always going to be time-consuming, it was all about getting the children and staff back into their normal teaching environment as soon as possible.
Project Proposal
EI Projects were instructed with all demolition, plus the design and build reinstatement works. The floor screed, underfloor heating and slab insulation were all affected by water ingress and were initially removed. It was subsequently discovered that low levels (up to one metre) of plasterboard construction walls were also compromised by the damp and fungal growth along with skirtings, joinery, fixtures and fittings.
A period of adequate drying time was allowed then all underfloor heating pipes and screed was replaced as well as betterment works to the slab insulation. Internal and external skins of walls were re-installed to repair the internal structure of the building and the renovation completed with re-decoration, new carpet, vinyl floor finishes and joinery.
The opportunity was taken to also redesign the inadequate underfloor heating system and all passive fire protection works to ceiling voids, cavities and compartment walls.
The completed project was handed back over to Hertfordshire County council on program and to the delight of the teachers and pupils alike as they were reunited with the school.
